While men's skin and hair care are finally getting the attention they deserve, soon-to-be grooms might still be unsure where to start with their pre-wedding prep. If you fall in this category, we’ve got you covered. Celebrity stylists Aalim Khan, of the famed Hakim’s Aalim salon in Mumbai, and Chriselle Ann Baptista—known for her work with Tira Beauty and Bobbi Brown—share their essential grooming tips. Add these to your must-do list…

Hydrate, hydrate and—you guessed it—hydrate

Drinking lots of water, eating clean and exercising are the simplest ways to achieve healthy skin—and this is not only for your wedding day but for all the happily married days after too. Starting your day with lemon water or your preferred probiotic can help reduce inflammation and build collagen, making your skin tighter and clearer. Take your hydration game one level up—Hydrafacials are recommended by dermatologists and are suitable for all skin tones, allowing an aesthetician to cleanse, exfoliate and infuse the skin with rejuvenating and nourishing serums. Like with any new treatment, try out the facial a few months earlier to prevent the panic of an unforeseen reaction.

Ice is your new friend

No time for the ice-water bowl? No problem. Take that ice cube from your freezer and rub it gently across your face every morning and night. Ice on your skin can help to increase skin tightness, reduce puffiness and increase blood flow circulation, giving you the clean and glowing look every groom deserves to have on their wedding day.

Next up: Mastering your mane game

If it’s an Indian wedding, you know there will be multiple functions. So it’s crucial to visit a skilled hairdresser or barber in the weeks leading up. “From the sangeet to the reception, and from traditional Indian outfits to tuxedos, you’d want your hair styled differently, making it all the more important to have a mood board in place,” says Aalim.

You also need to familiarise yourself with the right products and techniques to cater to various hair types. “Those with curly hair might opt for a sleek, blow-dried look, while those with long hair could style it into a man bun or ponytail for a polished appearance. Short hair can be styled into a quiff or pompadour, providing a neat look from all angles for the multitude of photographs taken during weddings,” suggests Aalim, adding that products with a matte finish and good hold are best as they ensure the hair does not look overly set.

For mid-length or silky straight hair, adding volume and texture through tonging can create a stylish, masculine look. Matte products can help maintain this texture, giving the hair a natural yet refined appearance. Alternatively, for those who prefer a sleek look, hair gels can be used to keep longer hair neat and tidy, suggests Aalim.

Keep your beard sharp

Who said all grooms need to go for a clean and smooth shave? If you are one with the beard, keep it on, but keep it trimmed. Using “beard grooming products like a light wax goes a long way,” Baptista explains, “or a transparent hair mascara if that's easier to handle”. Save yourself any accidents with the shaver and visit the barber to get the perfect beard that frames your facial structure. Using the right tools to manage frizz is key to achieving a polished look. “For traditional outfits, such as a Maharaja ensemble, grooms might want to twirl their moustache using gel, adding a regal touch,” adds Aaalim.

Concealer and mascara are must-haves

There’s a reason why every woman keeps the essentials in her purse—we never know when that zit can strike. Men deserve to feel their best too, and a concealer can be the perfect solution to cover up potential grooming mishaps, from last-minute acne to a stress-induced pimple. Similarly, black mascara for your beard can help cover those pesky greys that show up, and give your beard an even tone. Perhaps, makeup is not the fit for every groom, so make sure to choose what feels comfortable for you.

Nail it

Although manicures and pedicures may not seem like a necessity on your grooming-for-grooms list, dry hands and long nails are not the look you want to go for, especially when there are far too many hands to shake on the wedding day. And with cameras up front and centre, it’s the small things like trimming your nose hairs or plucking in the middle of your eyebrows that go a long way to giving you a polished appearance.

Fragrance matters

When it comes to your wedding day, looking good is just part of the equation; smelling great is equally important. Many grooms may rely on a quick spritz of body spray, but choosing the right fragrance and applying it correctly can make a significant difference. “Select a strong, long-lasting fragrance. You can't keep reapplying it throughout the day, so it's essential that your scent endures from the ceremony to the reception. Layering is also key—apply it to your back, underarms, neck, and even your clothes for a more sustained effect,” says Aalim. Smelling good isn't just about you; it's about your guests, too. People will be congratulating you from all sides—front, back, left and right. “Many overlook applying fragrance to their back, but as you'll be receiving pats and hugs, it's crucial. I recommend spraying your tuxedo or outfit from the back first, then the front,” he adds.

Make that smile count… & workout

Consider at-home whitening kits or professional treatments to make sure your smile is photo-ready. Feeling good is just as important as looking good. Incorporate a fitness routine that includes both cardio and strength training to help you feel confident and energised.

Wedding planning can be stressful. Take time to relax and de-stress. Try meditation, yoga, or even a spa day to help you stay calm and centered. “Confidence is your best accessory. Take care of yourself, follow these tips, and you’ll not only look great but feel great too,” adds Baptista.
