Building the perfect jewellery box, according to a ‘ring whisperer’

For jewellery consultant Beanie Major, it’s all about buying basics with personality

With so many options to shop and trends that seem to shift each week, it can be difficult to nail a singular, distinctive jewellery look of your own. The idea of a capsule collection has long been touted as a solution to our clothing woes. But here’s the thing: it’s a concept that can be extended to your baubles as well—a curation of essential pieces that blend style and function and can be worn with a variety of outfits. The question is: how do you build this collection?

Enter Beanie Major. Described by Vogue as a “ring whisperer”, the London-based personal shopper, jewellery consultant, and founder of jewellery concierge In Detail, has spent the past decade learning from jewellers and poring through their personal archives. Her philosophy is clear: what you buy should work hard for you no matter what you’re wearing. As a self-professed minimalist, she advocates for a thoughtful curation. “I don’t like to have a lot of stuff in my life so when I buy things, I like to be extremely well researched, understand the market, and make comparisons. There are key pieces that will take you anywhere. Think of it like having your classic white shirt or a great pair of jeans. Similarly, these pieces should serve as a great springboard to build on.” And while a capsule collection should have the basics, that doesn’t mean it needs to be dull. “Look at contemporary designers who provide something a little bit different or venture into antique and vintage stores. Mixing these pieces together can add a whole new level and depth to your look,” says Major. This is where your jewellery capsule collection starts to develop a personality of its own.

A handy tip, she suggests, is to take the time to think about what suits us in the same way we do with our clothes. “We think about how a pair of jeans fits, the tailoring, that kind of thing. Similarly, different lengths of chains and earrings suit different people, and size is a big element that comes into play.”

So where does one start when it comes to building the perfect jewellery capsule collection? “When I work with a client, it’s really about getting to know them,” says Major. “What’s their style and lifestyle? What are their values? I look at what they’ve already got, what can be remodelled or sold to make space for something else.” Remember, a capsule jewellery collection should simplify your life, not complicate it, so there’s no rush to buy everything all at once. Below, Major’s recommendations of the top five categories to start building the jewellery box of your dreams.

Studs to build an earscape

“A cracking pair of diamond studs is a great place to start your collection. If you already have a set, opt for stones in different shapes or colours.”

Effortlessly cool hoops

“Every woman should have a good pair of hoops. A lot of designers are experimenting with their own take, whether it’s diamond studded, mixed metal, new silhouettes, or new widths.”

The surprise element: a pinky ring

“My personal favourite, it’s an item that’s powerful, but also quite sexy. And we’ve got two pinky fingers! The pinky finger is a lovely place to wear a jewel and it complements any other ring you might choose to wear it with it.”

Chains for your necklace stack

“Find a strand you can wear on its own or add multiple pendants and amulets that stack up. You’ll get a lot of mileage out of those pieces just from the number of iterations they provide.”

A gem-studded bangle

“Your wrists are such a beautiful part of the body to draw attention to, whether through bangles or line bracelets. Investing in two or three key pieces will give you that lovely movement.”
